"Undertow", 1997

This 1994 scene was located in one of Manhattan's Lower East Side neighborhoods, but actually could have been located in any other part of the city. The graffiti-covered van is what first attracted me to this scene, as it created a good balance with the bodega's own bright colors. The van also allowed me the opportunity to create more depth in the painting.
Graffiti has long been a very hot topic in urban politics. And while some of it can be considered vandalism, I couldn't begin to imagine the city without it. This is the most creative and unselfish form of modern art. I have actually had the opportunity to witness a "Burner" (large work) get painted. The artist paints close and fast, often having to change spray tips for various effects, with a constant look over the shoulder for police. Often they paint with very limited light, as it's safer to paint at night. There is no gallery opening or newspaper review, no rich collections or museum retrospective. This is pure art, because it is original, it's from the heart and it's good.
