MW15 - Ride the Lightning image

"Ride the Lightning", 1997
Marc Winnat, Artist
Acrylic on Canvas
Size: 36" x 24"

This painting depicts this great old firehouse, the way it looked back in 1997. Located on Henry Street in Manhattan's Lower East Side, the house is a historical veteran of the city's colorful history. It was here (in a previous building), that the notorious Tammany Hall politician, Boss Tweed, ran with the Big6 Tigers, which were the volunteer fire company that occupied this site in the mid 1800's.

At the time of this painting, the firehouse was still resisting a wave of changes that were about to engulf it. If you look at the engine's driver's side mirror, you will see an automobile mirror mounted onto the rig. This is because the engine simply wouldn't fit through the door with a truck mirror. Today, the door has been widened and the "Mack" engine has been replaced with a new "Seagrave" engine, leaving this scene to fade into history.
