"A Parade of Ghosts", 1994

This painting of Manhattan's McSorley's Ale House, depicts a 1994 view of the city's oldest continuously open saloon. Located in the East Village on East 7th Street, McSorley's has been serving its ales to people from all walks of life, since 1854. Some of these folks include Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt (when he was New York's police chief).

The first time I visited the place back in 1993, I was standing at the bar having my 2 ales (Ales are purchased in pairs.) and I decided to light up a cigarette. Looking around, I didn't see an ashtray, so I asked the bartender for one. He was washing out beer mugs and without looking up, told me I was standing on it. So I look down and see the floor, which was covered with sawdust. Seeing the flammable sawdust, I then responded that I really didn't want to be responsible for burning the place down. It was then that the bartender walked over and with a big smile, told me "The place ain't burned in 139 years, so what makes you think it's gonna burn for you?" So I lit up and ordered 2 more ales.
