MW28 - Once Upon a Time in Brooklyn image

I saw this view back in 2000 after a visit to Peter Luger's Steak House in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. The view is really nothing new as variations of this scene have been photographed, painted and even filmed throughout the 20th century. Normally I don't like walking in the footsteps of other artists when selecting scenes for my paintings, but this scene is very original in its own way. Notice the huge tarp covering the Brooklyn side tower of the Williamsburg Bridge in the background. Repair construction was actually winding down and within a few months the tarp would be removed to display the restored tower.

It was real easy to see why it is such a popular view with my fellow artists. The composition could not be better for an urban scene. But in this aspect the balance is not across the scene but downrange, creating a unique tension between the bridge in the background and the street in the foreground. I decided to take things even further with this scene by adding the car into the immediate foreground. This pushes the fading street back even further which actually makes the bridge loom even larger.
