MW32 - Against the Wind

"Against the Wind", 2004
Marc Winnat, Artist
Acrylic on Canvas

One of the drawbacks of painting city scenes is that most of the subject matter is rigid with very little flow. The flow is then created in my work through composition and the use of technical tricks used to juggle the depth of the scene to catch your eye.

Nature is very different though, as nature adapts through constant change. Much of this change is caused by movement. The wind, the currents of the seas, the shadows which creep across our world and the light that guides these shadows are all elements of this movement. Working together in God's wonderful splendor, they give us a different view whenever we take the time to open our eyes and actually take a look.

It's this philosophy that came to heart as I stood on the beach on a cold, stormy winter's day watching the ocean at play. The waves were rolling in heavy that day despite a headwind that ferociously fought them every chance it got. It seemed as if they were playing a sort of game with the wind as they would roll in low and in sets of 3 to 4. Then as if to use the element of surprise, they would suddenly rise with all their strength to a towering crest as if prepared to strike. But the wind was ready as it always is. Throwing its gusts in full force, it slammed back into the wave creating a sort of standoff for the very slightest moment. It's this moment when the wave is in its full glory, giving me the portrait I enjoy so much. Then just as quickly it rolls to a crash as if to make room for its brothers and sisters, which are all awaiting their turns to try their luck against the wind.
