MW34 - Last in Line

"Last in Line", 2004

Sunlight fades earlier with every day while that familiar frosty bite in the wind slowly grows its new teeth. No snow yet, but it's close. Even the gulls seem somewhat subdued, sitting huddled on sheltered perches as if to conserve energy to meet the approaching winter. Their eyes still sharp in their search for trouble or food, but pretty much ignoring everything else.

The boardwalk is very quiet these days with only the occasional jogger providing movement. Scattered groups of tourists stand along the boardwalk's edge gazing out at ships in the harbor approach. "Looks cold out there, I wonder where those ships are going?.............................................I'm freezing, let's go back".

Astroland is quiet now with all of the rides shut down and prepped for winter. Its only denizen is a mean looking dog which has the run of the place while standing guard. Looks like a graveyard in many ways, yet the smiling faces on the characters of the rides seem to provide assurance that life will once again return next season.

Walking back towards the Subway station I am greeted by one last concession stand trying to squeeze the last few bucks out of what's left of the tourists. It's close enough to Nathan's Hot Dog stand to catch the occasional sucker. But far enough away to not be worth the energy to most others. Looks kind of spooky being lit up way out on the perimeter all by itself.

And it should, as it's the last in line.
