MW38 - White Island Flyers

"White Island Flyers", 2004
Marc Winnat, Artist
Acrylic on Canvas

It's funny, as when my Aerospace employer shut down our facility in New Jersey and I took a transfer to another division in New Hampshire, I swore up and down that I would never paint a non-New York City scene. Well those of you who know me can testify that at times, I am almost as full of shit as I am devoted to my painting.

I first met the Isles of Shoals back in 1998 when I took a fishing trip that wove through these islands just off the New Hampshire coast. From the coast they are but tiny specs of gray scratching the horizon. Often not even visible when the weather turns dark. But they are there, always there.

Up close they are a series of haunted entities, seemingly trapped in another time which has long since past. The large island has a small village which is owned by a private organization that takes care of the buildings. To the outsider, the place looks like a ghost town with its only visitors being the occasional tourist or fishermen who have also been pulled in by the song of the Isles sirens.

Across a small channel from the large island sits White Island which is also the home to the famous lighthouse that guards this fortress of solitude. A veteran of countless battles with monstrous seas, the lighthouse stands with a grace and presence that gives you the impression it has been accepted by the ocean as a true brother in arms.

The scene in this painting is of White Island's Northeastern peak which juts out into the ocean in an impressive rise that then descends quickly back into the sea. When the tide is low, this barb of rocks enters the scene and quickly becomes the target of incoming seas. The waves crash and roll in an endless dance, interrupted only by the limited amount of time I have in my world to witness this spectacle. But it's the flyers, yes, the flyers in their soaring grace that will always be there.
