"And the Deuce Fell", 1998
Marc Winnat, Artist
Acrylic on Canvas
Size: 36" x 24"
On December 30th, 1997, I was in the city coming back from a day spent exploring the South Bronx. For some reason, I decided to visit Times Square to see what was going on. When I got there, I saw that 42nd Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues, was closed due to a building collapse the night before. Demolition crews were tearing down what was left of the old building that had this great sign, which advertised movies on 42nd Street painted on its side. The sign always looked funny, when this section of the street was full of porno theaters in the 70's and 80's and was nicknamed "The Deuce". Gentrification has changed the area so much, that today the only thing left is the "Lyric Theater", which sits in the foreground of the painting and is actually still there today.
