"Bridge of Sighs, Brooklyn", 1997

Located in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, the Myrtle Avenue elevated subway station at Broadway and Myrtle Avenue is a maze of shadows and steel. When I first saw this scene, I knew instantly I wanted to paint it. This is a great old station, as there is something interesting at every point in this facility. The walkway bridge caught my eye here, as it works very well against the diagonal angles of the support beams on the main structure. Up top, the tracks are lined with decrepit old buildings with signs advertising products, which haven't been manufactured for many years (Norge Refrigerators is one). Like most of Brooklyn's old elevated stations, there is a nostalgia that completes the scene, which is missing from the newly remodeled stations.
