By the mid 1990's, the Williamsburg Bridge was turning into a rusted out, graffiti-covered dying giant. Being one of only 2 bridges with an open walkway that takes you over to Brooklyn. The bridge provides great views of both sides of the East River. In 1995, a massive renovation project was begun and the nets were hung to prevent travelers on the bridge from being hit by falling objects. Today, the original walkway is now closed, but there is a brand new one on the south side of the bridge, which is open. Hopefully, when the project is finished, both sides will have access.
